Yoga at the Great Lawn (Tues, June 22, 2010)
I spent the morning at my son’s Pre-K graduation and the proud mama I am was ready to celebrate motherhood with yoga. The stars were perfectly aligned for yoga inNew York this week. The day after the Times Square event, Flavorpill presented the Yoga at the Great Lawn event. A record breaking feat of 10,000 yogis and yoginis practicing at the same time in Central Park . Incredible.

Getting into the event was an adventure in itself. After making it to the Central Park West entrance my friends and I were greeted by a massive line that meandered up, down and around the paths of the park. It did not look promising at all, there was not much time before the start of the event and when the line finally started to move it merged with another line of frustrated yogis and yogettes (as my friend loving calls us women). Just when I thought we were going to miss out on an opportunity for an outdoor class as well as the free yoga mat and bag (I really needed a new one) my friend graciously offered us entry as her husband’s (a performer at the event) special guests. Long story short, our whole party finally made it, we got our goodies and JetBlue mats stamped "Be True to Yourself and You Will Always Be Rewarded.”
As the rain clouds hovered above, we got settled, started on our goodies (yes after all that waiting we were hungry) and the program finally got started. Though the first rain drops didn’t deter us, unfortunately, while my group and the other 10,000 people in the lawn were able to chant and do one sun salutation sequence -which was beautiful to see done in unison with so many people- the event was shut down due to the impending storm. The rain that we hoped would pass, released in its full glory and it was definitely time to pack up. Finding creative uses for our new mats as rain hats and ponchos, a sea of what were just moments before yoga classmates waded out of Central Park , jumping over puddles and trying to find the best routes home. With hurried kisses and hugs goodbye, our friend circle dispersed and I went to back to my dry apartment, to snuggle with my husband and Kindergarten bound baby.
